Monticello Assisted Living and Healthcare is pleased to introduce you to Ritch Atkinson. Eating is a natural act that most people take for granted. This is not the case for one such individual who we have been given the pleasure to care for at Monticello Assisted Living and Healthcare. Ritch Atkinson is an amazing 36 year old man who has a history of an intracerebral hemorrhage which caused several deficits including dysphagia. Dysphagia is a medical term for an individual who has a swallowing disorder. In order to ensure adequate nutrition, Ritch had a feeding tube placed in August of 1999 due to his inability to swallow.

Mr. Atkinson began a speech therapy program to concentrate on strengthening his mouth and throat muscles. Ritch has been able to begin accepting small amounts of food without signs and symptoms of food or water entering the lungs. With the close supervision of his therapy team, his hard work is beginning to pay off. His oral (mouth) muscles are now within functional limits.

Ritch is a hard working, fun loving and wonderful resident at Monticello Assisted Living and Healthcare. With his determination, family, and medical team support he continues to work toward his number one goal which is “to eat”! Keep up the good work Ritch!
